UK Day 2 – Harry Potter Studio Tour

Being a huge and long time Harry Potter fan, the Studio tour was the first thing I booked after my flight, and i booked it for the day after I arrived because I know I needed as much energy I can use to maximize my visit. My accommodation is at the East side of London while Leavesden, where the Warner Brother Studios is located, is on the West so it was a bit of a long travel. I feel like I’ve already mastered the art of riding the tube in the two days that I have been here.

I got to Watford Junction just in time to catch the bus headed to the Warner Brothers Studios. It’s the easiest way to get there and you can’t miss the bus! It’s covered in Harry Potter!!

When you enter the studios, you’re greeted by giant portraits of the actors, a cafe to the left and the gift shop to the right (where I spent so much money on!!!) I joined the queue to enter and in no time I got in. You first have to go through two video showings before actually seeing the real studio. The first movie was mainly about the general success of Harry Potter with the fans. The second one got me crying, where the three main actors explained the purpose behind the studio tours and how it’s like a tribute to everyone behind the films who made the success possible. I think I reached my breaking point when Emma Watson said “(The crew) made the magic world real and our real world magical.”

Coffee and Harry Potter… two of my favorite things

After the film viewings we’re finally allowed into the studios. The first set that we see is the Great Hall which is indeed great. Although it does look smaller as compared to how it looks in the films, I really felt like I was in Hogwarts getting ready for supper with my house (Ravenclaw!!)

Once you get past the Great Hall, you enter a really big studio which contains the other sets used in the movie such as Dumbledore’s Office, the Gryffindor dorm and Common Room, the interior of the Burrow, Umbridge’s Office, Hagrid’s Hut, etc. It also cotained several displays of props such as Voldemort’s Horcruxes, Rita Skeeter’s quill, the Goblet of Fire and some brooms! There was actually an area where you can ride a broom and fly around Hogwarts, the streets of London, the Great Lake (of course all via green screen).

The Studio Tour has two main studios indoor studios and is separated by an open area which contains even more of the props and scenes! This is where you can see the Hogwarts Bridge, #4 Privet Drive, Godric Hollow, the Knight Bus, the Grave of Tom Riddle Sr., and Sirius’ motorbike. They also serve butterbeer, which is really sweet and frothy, in this area and I really enjoyed it! I made friends with another solo traveler, a really sweet Korean girl and we decided we would take each other’s pictures around this area since we were allowed to pose on the props in this area.

The next area was the Monsters area! They showed the many different creatures that were made for the film and some videos on how they were made.   We got to pass through the actual Diagon Alley! I wish it was real so that I could go into each shop, get a wand, adopt a pet owl,  buy a broom, fit a robe. They also featured some of the paintings and scale models used to imagine how the scenes would look like.

Finally, and this was one of the most majestic sights I’ve seen, there was a really big and pretty model of the entire Hogwarts Castle! It’s really beautiful and you know that they’ve done a lot of work to perfect it! Wow.

The tour ends in the gift shop where I got some things for myself and for my Harry Potter fan friends. A lot of wonderful things to see. I wanted to buy a stuffed Hippogriff but I wouldn’t have any space for it in my baggage!

I really think every Potter fan should make it a point to visit the Harry Potter Studio at least once in their lifetime. It’s an amazing experience and you could really see all the hard work everyone put into making the amazing world of Harry Potter come to life! It took me almost four hours just to go through the entire thing! There was so many things to see! I would definitely want to go back if given the chance!! But for now I’m just happy I was given the chance to actually experience the whole thing first hand!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I’m really bad at making reviews for my favorite things because my emotions get the best of me, so I’m not claiming that this is a review.  Rather I’d like to think that it’s a reaction to the first part of the epic finale of Harry Potter.

We had to drive all the way to Bahrain just to catch the movie on the first week. We weren’t able to reserve tickets since, well, it’s in another country. Luckily we arrived at the mall early so we were able to get really good seats (smack at the middle of the cinema yea.). I watched my the movie with my brother who until recently, had no interest in the magical world of Harry Potter.

I started crying uncontrollably when they showed Hermione in her room. That whole montage until the Order were at Harry’s door just got to me. I think the actors had grown so much. especially Emma Watson whose eyebrows were not overused in this movie (a good change).

I think the whole movie was a weepfest for me. The opening montage, Hedwig dying trying to save Harry (which I did not expect. It is a refreshing take on his whole death. I think it was better than how she died in the book), Ron getting splinched, Ron leaving (Rupert was AMAZING), Hermione getting tortured, and Dobby’s death in Harry’s arms.

I am more of a fan of the Harry Potter books than of the movies, since the movies tend to skip some parts or leave out parts that would be relevant in the next films. But I think this is more of a constraint than a conscious omission of scenes with future relevance. Not only is it difficult to perfectly translate the layers in the book onto the big screen, but it is also a challenge to please and entertain both fans of the series (both of the books and the movies) and casual viewers.

In addition to that, the movies were being made even before Rowling completed the series. Anyone who had read the series would know that the whole plot has been so intricately made that small details in past books have been highlighted in later books (seeing an old tiara where Harry hid the Half Blood Prince’s potions textbook which ends up being a Horcrux, Tom Riddle’s Diary playing a bigger role that we thought it would from CoS, and the significance of the locket found in Kreacher’s cupboard in OotP which played a greater role in the final book). Unfortunately, the writers (especially Kloves who’s getting most of the anger from fans)  did not know this while writing the script.

Although I would have liked to seen how the movies would have looked like if they were released after all seven books were published, I don’t think they would find a cast as perfect as the have right now, with the whole cast (with the understandable case of Dumbledore) had stayed with Harry Potter until the end. That itself is one of the greatest accomplishments of Harry Potter as a movie series.

And because of all I said, I don’t agree with all the purists who want every single word in the book to make an appearance in the films. Whenever I watch the films, I try to separate them from the books and see them as an entity in itself with my knowledge of the books merely as supplemental, in order for me to completely understand what was going on.

There were several missing scenes and dialogue that disappointed me a bit, some being the redemption of Dudley where he tells Harry he wasn’t a waste of space and the line “he knew you would come back” (which i was expecting while they were talking. It was one of the lines from the book that moved me). But this did not in any way curb the satisfaction I received by the end of the film.

In retrospect, this film has actually been the most accurate and faithful to the books, so you know that long and dragging camping scene casual movie goers are complaining about? Yeah that was in the book. Personally, I did not find it to be long and dragging, since well it was much longer in the books (where they actually talked about the cooking, hunting for food, overhearing Dean and the others on the run, Ron complaining about Hermione’s cooking, and a lot of talk). Also, the scenes of them camping were interrupted by the Doe, Godric’s Hollow, the Lovegood Residence, destroying a horcrux, etc. I actually thought they did a good mix of both action and camping scenes.

With all that, I just want to end this post with: OMG I LOVED THE MOVIE SFM YOU GUISE MUST ALL WATCH IT. I WAS AN EMOTIONAL MESS LEAVING THE CINEMA AFTER TWO AND A HALF HOURS.

Incoherent retelling of my action-packed week

I haven’t been able to blog this week since my friend was here for a couple of days and I tried to maximize my time with her since it’s very rare that I actually have friends around. This week has been pretty productive actually. I’ve gone shopping twice, gone to the gym for the whole week, went to the beach, drank actual coffee, and played bandhero.

I actually have a life away from the computer. I really hope I can maintain my gym activity even if I don’t have someone who will accompany me there. My whole body is sore from the exercise but I really enjoy it and maybe I shall one day experience being thin once more.

It’s November and November really excites me.

  1. Psych Mid-season premiere
  2. Darren Criss on Glee (so proud of my bb)
  3. HARRY POTTER 7 (although I’m probably watching it on July but still!!)

Also, it’s one month from Christmas!

Since I’m being extremely incoherent anyway (a lot has happened since my last post) I would like to announce that we have an addition to our small family.

Meet Portia! (We named her Portia because we found her on our porch one day) I wanted to name her Itteh Bitteh Kitteh but my brother said it was too long. She’s a stray kitten who just kept coming back no matter how far away my dad brought her. I really felt bad for her so we took her in. Now she’s gotten really fat! In just a matter of days! My whole family is amused by her since she’s really very smart.

To end this post, here’s the outfit I wore a few days ago. I haven’t been posting my outfits lately since I’ve gotten really fat and other times I just wear boring clothes. But I think I look less fat in this and I quite like what I did.

Purple Vneck: Robinsons Department Store (Men’s section) – Php150

Vest: Thrifted – Php 100

One of the biggest downsides of being in Saudi Arabia is that there are no updated Cinemas in the area. There is one cinema here that is walking distance from my house, but it shows really old movies. It really frustrates me since I won’t be watching the Harry Potter movie until December 2, which is around two weeks from the official release date.

I have decided not to go on Tumblr before I watch it. I won’t want to spoil myself. My mom told me to download a bad torrent copy of it but it won’t be the same. I’m so annoyed. But what annoyed me more is that my mom called me a brat when I explained to her that I’m a big fan. I honestly tried my best to take it well. Being a brat would mean me not talking to my parents until they can either let me go back to the Philippines early or drive me to Bahrain as soon as we can.

I was merely explaining why (1) I won’t download the ugly version from torrent – as she told me to do in the mean time and (2) why I said I would not go online to the sites I regularly go to for two weeks.

Oh, if only I could drive myself to Bahrain. Maybe I can wear a wig and a fake mustache so I can actually do that.

To do list

Ever since I graduated, I have had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do with my life. I’m now twenty one, single, and unemployed (But I do have plans to continue my education next year).

I realized there are a lot of things I want to do, but I don’t have the resources to do it. One of my biggest goals is for me to settle down, have a family with two children and be a good mother and wife. Hopefully 2012 won’t be the end of us so I can have that.

But before all that, there are also things I would like to do now, while I’m still single and not tied down by commitment.

1. Watch a Broadway Musical

I have always been a fan of musicals, but since I’m not as privileged, the only live musical I have watched is the Charlie Brown Musical staged in the UA&P auditorium in my senior year. Rent, Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Singing in the Rain, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Hairspray are only available to me through their movie versions. I felt really sad when Rent announced its final shows last year, so I won’t be able to watch them live.

I would have wanted to watch Rent live, and if it were still running, I would choose it hands down. Unfortunately it isn’t so if I had the chance to watch a Broadway Musical, it would be between Phantom of the Opera, American Idiot, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The last one hasn’t shown yet, so I have no idea how good it will be. But come on, Daniel Radcliffe.

2. Go to Wizarding World of Harry Potter

People who know me well know that I am a Potternerd. Anything Harry Potter related gets me extremely excited. It has been a big part of my life, and I will go as far as saying Harry Potter is the pinnacle of my childhood and a huge part of my teenage years. So now that I’m twenty, Harry Potter still holds a big chunk of my heart, and I don’t think that will ever change. I owe it to the Potternerd in me to have tried authentic Butterbeer before I die.

3. Comic Con

If I’m lucky I will see the cast of my ultimate favorite television series, Psych.

If I’m luckier I will see Doctor Who and  Captain Jack. Of course I won’t  be able to meet David Tennant as Doctor Who anymore, but Matt Smith is fit too.

4. Visit the Cradle of Western Civilization

If there is one country in the world I would want to visit, it’s Greece. It’s so full of culture. I mean, isn’t it just beautiful?

5. Watch a FIFA World Cup Match live.

Hopefully in Brazil. But it doesn’t matter where, as long as I get to see Kaka and Ronaldo I will be happy.

I’m hopeful that the Vuvuzela will never make a come back in the matches, so I can enjoy it when I watch it live. Ah the excitement of being there during the match!

Of course there are more to my list, but these are my greatest wishes. I hope I can achieve at least half of the list. Yeah, I think I will be content with that. But for now, all I can do is dream, and hope I can earn enough money to make these dreams come true. (Cheesy end for a blog. Sry.)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Today started off great! The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows trailer is phenomenal. I am too excited for the next movie now.

It seems they haven’t left out too many scenes, and I hope they execute everything right. I’m might excited for the 7 potters scene although the upcoming death of two characters in that scene really makes me tear up. Well, the whole concept of the first part of the end of an epic story makes me tear up.

On other things, there’s something that is bothering me deeply, but of course I cannot act on it, not anymore. So now all I can do is pray. But if you’re reading this, I just want you to know that I’m still here. I’m always here.

Tumblr and Memes

Lately, I’ve been spending my time on Tumblr. It is much more addicting than Facebook is. Although I use my Tumblr to blog at times, I often use to express random spasms of emotion and my obsessions (such as Harry Potter, A Very Potter Musical, and – as of late – Hunger Games).

I’ve stumbled upon rather interesting time consumers while “resting”, and I decided to make a blog on my top ten favorite memes:

10.  Sassy Gay Friend

Sassy Gay Friend started as a series of Youtube videos that involved a sassy gay friend giving advice to Shakespearean characters (and Eve) about to take their lives. This eventually was turned into a meme that has its own Tumblr page.

9. Cannot Unsee (and its variants)

Cannot unsee is basically a meme that points out obvious similarities between two objects and/or people that would not be seen if they were not juxtaposed. Two of the websites I frequent are cannotunsee.net and totallylookslike.com (owned by the cheezburger network)

8. Your Argument is Invalid

The phrase “your argument is invalid” has been used in real life as a retort during debates when there are fallacious claims in one’s argument. In the interwebs, it is applied usually to odd or unusual images that are posted online. I actually find it difficult to explain, but maybe the pictures can explain themselves:

7. High Expectations Asian Father

I know this sounds racist, but it is just so funny. It even has its own tumblr page (which I follow, of course).

6. Haters Gonna Hate

This is simply a picture of a person in a very confident pose with the words “haters gonna hate”. I look at those pictures to constantly remind myself that, indeed, haters gonna hate.

(I had to include this because Emma is gorgeous. Agree? Y/Y?)

Off-shoots:

5. Sad Keanu

Sad Keanu was the product of a picture of Keanu Reeves eating alone on a bench looking glum and very creative people who began photoshopping him into different scenarios. There is a collection of picture over at tumblr.

4. LOLCats

The internet is made of two things: Cats and GIRLs (Guys in real life). I think the latter can be argued, but the former is an agreed on fact. The internet is made of cats. Visit here for more.

3. Time of the Month Tiger

This is a new favorite of mine but I think it has really proved its potential to be funny not only for girls who know how horrible it is to experience that time of the month but for guys who have female friends. The tumblr can be viewed here. Warning, it verges on TMI.

2.  LeoStrut

This was inspired by one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s scenes in Inception where he struts. His face in the pose makes this a WIN.

1. GraphJam

Finally, GraphJam. It puts concepts usually references of pop culture into graphs. It’s as simple as that. I know it’s really nerdy/geeky but I think people who know me well enough know I am nerdy and geeky.

More can be viewed at GraphJam.com

But of course, the most amazing meme has got to be THIS. It is simply CLASSIC, and never fails to make me smile.

And yes, I have this much free time.

Raj Raj Raj Pilipinas

The Philippine bet for Ms. Universe, Maria Venus Raj,  got into the top 5 of the competition. She finished as 4th runner up. I honestly do not see her as one who would fit the conventional notion of Filipina beauty. She has this very… different.. kind of pretty. I can’t really point it out but there’s something that radiates from within as well. I think it’s her confidence that makes her so appealing.

Congratulations, Venus Raj, you are the Universe’s 5th most beautiful woman.

This is a breath of fresh air given the very serious mood that surrounded the country yesterday. This deserves a little dance.

He’s saying “Raj Raj Raj”

Harry Potter

Jude, Henry, and I are on a mission. This is to complete reading the Harry Potter series before the 7th movie comes out (which is on November na Yay!) As of today I’m on the fourth book. I forget how much longer it is compared to the first three books. But this is my 2nd favorite book. (5-4-3-7-1-6-2). There being the final movie of harry potter is affecting me very much. It’s like the end of my childhood. Harry Potter has been a good part of my childhood to teenage years. I even spent a good number of years in a harry potter forum discussing theories for the final book.

In my heart and mind the Harry Potter universe will always be so much more awesome than that of Twilight. I’m not judging anyone who is in love with Twilight. I just can’t get over the fact that Edward = Cedric. Plus he’s a sparkling vampire.

Harry Potter will always be a big part of my life. And even if the series is done, the magic won’t end.
