UK Day 3 – Cardiff and the Doctor Who Experience

Since I’m already in the United Kingdom I decided I might as well go to Cardiff and see the Doctor Who Experience! I love Doctor Who but I encountered so many problems before actually getting to the experience! First, I realized that I booked my ticket for 12:00 – 13:00 which was a bad idea because it takes around 3 – 4 hours just to get to Cardiff from the Victoria Coach Station. I decided to take the train which ended up costing more than 3 times more! Also, on my way to London Paddington, some lines in the Underground were being maintained so I had to reroute which added to my worries of being late for my too early time slot for my entry.

But there really was not much to worry about! I got to Cardiff at 10:30 am! Just  in time to get to Cardiff Bay and be there a few minutes before my time slot started. Makes me think I should have just taken the coach to save money. Then again, the scenic route that the train passed by was really beautiful and I did not feel the 3 hours I was on the train. Time seemed to pass by so quickly even if  was alone.

It was so cold even animals needed extra layers

It was a sunny day when I got to Cardiff which was a beautiful sight to see as I have not seen the sun since I got to London and I’m incredibly used to the sun. The Doctor Who Experience was AMAZING! Fans of the show will really enjoy the first part which was really a pleasant surprise. I won’t spoil it anymore but we weren’t allowed to take pictures during that event because they didn’t want to spoil it for those who will  attend in the future. It really was an experience.

The exhibit part of the experience was really cool. It showcased the different Doctors, Companions, and Aliens that were featured on the show since 1963! It was amazing that even the most recent companion, Oswin, who has not even appeared as companion (only as a guest character at that time) had her own display amongst the companions!

It was smaller than the Harry Potter Studio Tour but there was still a  lot to see that would make any fan explode with excitement.

After I was done with the Doctor Who Experience, which took my approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, I went off to Cardiff Bay. It was the perfect opportunity to visit the Wales Millennium Center, which is the front of TORCHWOOD 3, and the Ianto Jones Shrine which seems to still be receiving a healthy number of visitors since there are still flowers there that look fairly recent.

After going around the Doctor Who and Torchwood related sites, I jumped on a bus to the city. Funny story. I rode the bus to the city and had no idea where to go down so I ended up riding the bus all the way to is next route which was in Sports  City. It’s pretty cool though since I was still able to tour around Cardiff with the fare of a simple bus rather than paying a hefty amount to ride one of those tour buses.

Finally, I got down at Cardiff Castle, which is a beautiful castle that is well maintained inside and outside! The interior of the Castle remains to be beautiful. Sadly, I wasn’t able to take pictures because my camera battery died and I was preserving my phone battery for my 3 hour trip going back to London.

I was considering staying back in Cardiff for a night and returning the next day but I accidentally left my iPhone charger in my accommodations and so had no way to charge my phone when it died. It’s funny now that I think about it that  was more concerned about the battery of my iPhone than with the fact that I had no change of clothes with me that would allow me to stay in Cardiff for a night.

Left Cardiff Central Station at about 5:30 pm and got home by 9:00pm. It was an incredibly tiring (and expensive!!) day trip! I enjoyed every second of it and i don’t regret spending so much money on the tour. Not may people are able to say that they have ridden a TARDIS!

Incoherent retelling of my action-packed week

I haven’t been able to blog this week since my friend was here for a couple of days and I tried to maximize my time with her since it’s very rare that I actually have friends around. This week has been pretty productive actually. I’ve gone shopping twice, gone to the gym for the whole week, went to the beach, drank actual coffee, and played bandhero.

I actually have a life away from the computer. I really hope I can maintain my gym activity even if I don’t have someone who will accompany me there. My whole body is sore from the exercise but I really enjoy it and maybe I shall one day experience being thin once more.

It’s November and November really excites me.

  1. Psych Mid-season premiere
  2. Darren Criss on Glee (so proud of my bb)
  3. HARRY POTTER 7 (although I’m probably watching it on July but still!!)

Also, it’s one month from Christmas!

Since I’m being extremely incoherent anyway (a lot has happened since my last post) I would like to announce that we have an addition to our small family.

Meet Portia! (We named her Portia because we found her on our porch one day) I wanted to name her Itteh Bitteh Kitteh but my brother said it was too long. She’s a stray kitten who just kept coming back no matter how far away my dad brought her. I really felt bad for her so we took her in. Now she’s gotten really fat! In just a matter of days! My whole family is amused by her since she’s really very smart.

To end this post, here’s the outfit I wore a few days ago. I haven’t been posting my outfits lately since I’ve gotten really fat and other times I just wear boring clothes. But I think I look less fat in this and I quite like what I did.

On Plagiarism

On October 15, 2010, the Philippine Supreme Court made a decision that would lead to the death of academic and intellectual integrity in the country. Justice del Castillo was tried for allegedly plagiarizing international literature in his court decision and was cleared of these charges.

In July 2010, a case was filed against Justice del Castillo on the basis that he directly quoted several authors who wrote on topics related to the case he was handling without proper citations. After proper proceedings, he was cleared for of the following reasons:

  1. The legal researcher accidentally deleted the proper citation
  2. Microsoft Word failed to supply a mechanism that will allow it to check for copy-pasted material
  3. There was no malicious intent to pass the work as his own

It is absolutely preposterous for the Supreme Court to have agreed to this faulty reasoning presented by del Castillo. First of all, it is unfair for the legal researcher to receive the blame for del Castillo negligence. A legal researcher provides information such as literature and other cases that could supplement the points made by del Castillo in his defense. If he puts the blame on the legal researcher then perhaps it is an implication that his legal researcher does everything for him. If he were diligent enough, he would have at least reviewed what his legal researcher did, if he was too busy to write his own ponencia.

The second argument is just pure ignorance on his part. Bill Gates might as well sue the Philippine court for (further) tainting the name of Microsoft. Microsoft Word is a word processor. It is a typewriter with aesthetic functions, so obviously it does not have plagiarism detecting features. Maybe the Supreme Court should invest in something like turnitin which actually does check for plagiarism.

Finally, there’s the issue of not intending to plagiarize. I can’t find a definitive source that is not a dictionary or university pamphlet that presents the dangers of plagiarism, but in general it is the lack of or wrongful attribution of an idea to the original source. When I was still in uni, the concept and consequences of plagiarism were always drilled into our heads. Plagiarism is not citing a source. Plagiarism is citing the source wrongfully. Plagiarism is citing the wrong source. Negligence is never an excuse, just as ignorance is never an excuse when it comes to the law.

Plagiarism is a major issue in intellectual integrity. It can stain your reputation. But now there is a Supreme Court Justice who gets out of the case scot free. This has implications on the intellectual and legal development of society.

Of course the most obvious implication is that on intellectual integrity. In clearing Justice del Castillo, the Supreme Court has opened the floodgates for more (student) appeals with regard to counts of plagiarism, wherein they could state that it was not their intent to plagiarize.

Another implication is that on future cases. One valid source of court decision is precedents. By principle, if a case has the same facts as another, a decision is valid based on the previous case.  Although plagiarism is not a legal concept, in the growing prominence of the knowledge economy could lead  to more cases of this nature. It makes fighting against plagiarism in the future a losing battle.

How does one prove intent? And does the lack of malicious intent remove the fact that the crime has been done? In a more extreme case, you accidentally drive into the wall of someone’s house causing the roof to collapse and heavy damage on the part of the house owner. Even if you did not mean to crash into the house, there is fault. Perhaps you were not focusing or you forgot to refill your brake fluid. It was an accident, but it was from one’s negligence. That is reckless imprudence.

Plagiarism should be taken seriously, especially in the case of Justice del Castillo, as he is in a position that expects moral conduct and integrity. If we allow people like that in such positions, what does that have to say about the society we live in.

At the end of the day, all you really own in the world is your integrity. Once you give that up, you don’t ever get it back.” – Julian Baker, One Tree Hill 8×04

To the Supreme Court, especially to you – Justice del Castillo, David Tennant does not approve.

To do list

Ever since I graduated, I have had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do with my life. I’m now twenty one, single, and unemployed (But I do have plans to continue my education next year).

I realized there are a lot of things I want to do, but I don’t have the resources to do it. One of my biggest goals is for me to settle down, have a family with two children and be a good mother and wife. Hopefully 2012 won’t be the end of us so I can have that.

But before all that, there are also things I would like to do now, while I’m still single and not tied down by commitment.

1. Watch a Broadway Musical

I have always been a fan of musicals, but since I’m not as privileged, the only live musical I have watched is the Charlie Brown Musical staged in the UA&P auditorium in my senior year. Rent, Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Singing in the Rain, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Hairspray are only available to me through their movie versions. I felt really sad when Rent announced its final shows last year, so I won’t be able to watch them live.

I would have wanted to watch Rent live, and if it were still running, I would choose it hands down. Unfortunately it isn’t so if I had the chance to watch a Broadway Musical, it would be between Phantom of the Opera, American Idiot, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The last one hasn’t shown yet, so I have no idea how good it will be. But come on, Daniel Radcliffe.

2. Go to Wizarding World of Harry Potter

People who know me well know that I am a Potternerd. Anything Harry Potter related gets me extremely excited. It has been a big part of my life, and I will go as far as saying Harry Potter is the pinnacle of my childhood and a huge part of my teenage years. So now that I’m twenty, Harry Potter still holds a big chunk of my heart, and I don’t think that will ever change. I owe it to the Potternerd in me to have tried authentic Butterbeer before I die.

3. Comic Con

If I’m lucky I will see the cast of my ultimate favorite television series, Psych.

If I’m luckier I will see Doctor Who and  Captain Jack. Of course I won’t  be able to meet David Tennant as Doctor Who anymore, but Matt Smith is fit too.

4. Visit the Cradle of Western Civilization

If there is one country in the world I would want to visit, it’s Greece. It’s so full of culture. I mean, isn’t it just beautiful?

5. Watch a FIFA World Cup Match live.

Hopefully in Brazil. But it doesn’t matter where, as long as I get to see Kaka and Ronaldo I will be happy.

I’m hopeful that the Vuvuzela will never make a come back in the matches, so I can enjoy it when I watch it live. Ah the excitement of being there during the match!

Of course there are more to my list, but these are my greatest wishes. I hope I can achieve at least half of the list. Yeah, I think I will be content with that. But for now, all I can do is dream, and hope I can earn enough money to make these dreams come true. (Cheesy end for a blog. Sry.)

Wake up, Krasner, September has ended.

I haven’t been able to blog for a while, one of the biggest reasons being my thoughts are not as coherent as they are at the moment. Between today and my last post, things have been crazy. On a personal level I had strained a muscle so bad I could not walk without support or move  without any reverberating pain on my back to my thighs. It was horrible.

But I know I was in no right to complain. The day after I strained my back, the tragic De La Salle Bar Exam explosions occurred and my friend, Raissa Laurel, was involved in the incident. She lost both her legs to the accident. It was then when I decided not to complain about my leg pain, but rather rejoice for the pain because I still have legs to feel that pain.

After that I was just ashamed that I actually complained, while my friend Raissa took everything so well. She even took her own circumstance better than I did. I could not think properly given that everything that had happened seemed too close for comfort. Tragedy is put into perspective when someone you’ve interacted with is the one who is hurt.

Of course that is not the only mind-blowing incident that happened that day. As I was telling my best friend Henry, it was a horrible weekend for me, with everything just falling on my lap and it took me time to absorb all the information.

I felt if I blogged, I would be all irrational and just spew out all my emotions and regret it later (It has happened before).

To avoid this being a blog about blogging, I shall add: I have been preoccupied lately back watching Veronica Mars and Doctor Who episodes. I am rather enjoying Doctor Who, while the cancellation Veronica Mars remains to be one of The CW’s biggest mistakes.

Raj Raj Raj Pilipinas

The Philippine bet for Ms. Universe, Maria Venus Raj,  got into the top 5 of the competition. She finished as 4th runner up. I honestly do not see her as one who would fit the conventional notion of Filipina beauty. She has this very… different.. kind of pretty. I can’t really point it out but there’s something that radiates from within as well. I think it’s her confidence that makes her so appealing.

Congratulations, Venus Raj, you are the Universe’s 5th most beautiful woman.

This is a breath of fresh air given the very serious mood that surrounded the country yesterday. This deserves a little dance.

He’s saying “Raj Raj Raj”

Thesis adviser and more.

I had one of the sweetest conversations ever. And it was with my former thesis adviser, who is now a very good friend of mine. Actually, even before she became my thesis adviser, we were already quite close, which was the main reason she was assigned to me.

It went like this:

Sunday, July 18, 2010. 12:59 AM

It was the highlight of my day. I’ve been getting pretty homesick lately and I’ve been craving crazy for kwekkwek and fishball.

Anyway, I am extremely obsessed with Sterling Knight. Due to my bum-ness these days I’ve been heavily exposed to Disney shows (Sonny with a Chance) and movies (StarStruck). I thought it was kindov hypocritical of me to have a huge fangirl crush on Sterling because I cannot understand people my age crushing on Justin Bieber, but this was when I thought Sterling was 17. Then I found out he turned 21 on March. Ha. He’s actually five months older than me. But he looks much younger:

Half-time update

I’m currently watching the Portugal vs Spain game, and it’s half time. The game was crazy intense. And the score is still 0-0. I’m rooting for Portugal because Spain colonized us. (yes, I’m bitter, but I won’t side with the enemy! :P)

I ran to the bathroom right after the game, and I saw the weighing scale and ignored it completely. I’m not prepared to weigh myself yet, it would push me to go on a diet. Right now I’m enjoying my favorite ice cream, Hokey Pokey from Baskin Robbins. It’s White chocolate ice cream with crunchy honey comb pieces and caramel. Mmmmm… Calories.

The road to professional bumdom.

I just found out that our cable has 600 channels, unfortunately, half of the good channels,we did not subscribe to. So now I’m going to have to beg my parents to put in the good channels. Like Discovery Channel, E! (I need my daily source of hollywood “news”), and other channels that show the good series (Glee, Community, Heroes, Lost…. ehem: de gustibus non est disputandum.). But I think I’d need to find a job first because that would mean we would have to pay more to get these channels. Meh.

I’m still in my bum mode, although I have started Mission: Get Published which I now renamed Mission: Impossible. I scanned through some journal entries that were published by the journal I plan to submit my paper to. I have to change the whole layout of my thesis if I wanted to be publish. I wanted to know what kind of papers the journal accepted, and I decided to focus on organization first.

I haven’t gotten far, but I am progressing. I’ve outlined what I wanted to do (Well okay, in my head, but that is a start). I plan to apply for another Masters degree in 5 years, so by that time I hope to be published. That’s big dream, I know, but who knows. Anyway, I plan to study Political Communications, probably somewhere in the UK since that’s where they offer it. We’ll see.
